Hard Work Pays Off With Award Win

Following months of intensive product design and engineering development work by Greaves Best Design, our client Wave Craft limited used Middle East Workboats Exhibition in the UAE to launch WavebladePLUS the next generation in their range of biofouling removal tools. All of the effort and tight deadlines were vindicated when we won the ‘Most Innovative Product’ at the show award.

Waveblade Plus is a redesigned, heavy duty version of their popular barnacle removal tool Waveblade, which was launched in 2010 following an extensive program of engineering product development, project management and Far East component procurement undertaken by GBD.

With WavebladePLUS, Wave Craft set us a host of new challenges with unique features aimed at the marine maintenance professional rather than the private boat owner.

GBD’s engineering team have developed a totally new keyless chuck, which enables rapid blade changes. We have implemented changes to the internal drive mechanism to improve efficiency, reducing sound output and internal temperature control. Bespoke electronics have been developed to control blade speed and torque output no matter what the level of biofouling and store performance and usage data which can be downloaded for subsequent analysis.

Following input from the marine maintenance industry five new blade profiles were designed to assist them in their specialist cleaning activities.

This is a truly submersible power tool and has a 1.5m lead, to accommodate free diving, up to a depth of 30m (100ft). Offering significantly more blade speed and torque over the existing Waveblade GBD used brushless motor technology and a 14.4vdc rechargeable Li/Ion battery pack achieve a staggering 2 hours continuous use as well as other benefits over the original design. Utilizing our in-house skills we undertook several finite element analysis studies to determine the structural performance of the tool and battery pack case to ensure that they were capable of withstanding in excess of 3 bar of pressure.

Even though we have been able to introduce more speed and torque WavebladePLUS has been designed to easily remove thick biofouling without damaging the substrate and can therefore be used on a range of materials below and above the waterline such as metal, fiberglass and concrete.

The award and the considerable interest shown by the professionals visiting the show has resulted in significant orders been taken. The production ramp up now proceeds at pace.
